There are a number of options, depending on your situation. You can either match the color of the wall exactly, vary from that color a little to give the room a more diverse feel, or choose something altogether new. What works best will depend on your personal preferences and the dynamics of the room. To figure it out, buy paint samples and try them out on the trim.• Place tarps down all over the perimeter of the room, and make sure they overlap a little. Put the edge of the tarp into the space between the trim and the carpet’s edge. With the flat end and handle of the knife, ease the tarp into that space and into the corner of the room. It is important that the carpet be completely covered and sealed. Conversely, the trim should be as exposed as possible.• Tape the tarp to the carpet to keep it flat. Also place masking tape right where the top of the trim meets the wall, leaving no space but keeping the trim exposed. Do this around the entire perimeter and overlap the tape when you are done.• It’s now time to paint the trim, so move from one end all the way around. The side and top of the trim should be covered. Don’t brush beyond the perimeter of the masking tape, and allow the paint to dry. 1. Transfer all furniture to another room if possible. Any furniture too heavy to move out of the room, place in the middle of the room away from all walls.2. Use painter’s tape for taping windows and doors3. To protect from paint and dust, cover remaining furniture in the room, as well as the floor, with plastic drop cloths.4. Remove screws and photos from the walls, and fill the holes until you get a smooth wall.5. Switch off all electrical switches in the room.6. Keep children and pets away from the room.7. Assemble all equipment including drop cloths, sand paper, painter’s tape, paint scraper, spackling compound, putty knife, TSP (trisodium phosphate) and paint.8. Remove all lights from the room.9. Wash down all of the walls, removing grease grime and grit. Use the TSP for this.10. How to paint textured wallsThe cheapest, quickest and easiest way to change the look of a room is painting the walls. Textured walls require special attention while being painted. The nooks and crannies of a textured wall create a challenge to the painter.There are ways to get around them. Here are some quick & easy tips for you mentioned below.1. First choose the correct kind of paint. A semi-glass paint will give better coverage because it is not as easily absorbed by the texture as a flat paint is. Semi-gloss finishes are also easier to clean.2. Now prepare your surfaces. Priming a textured wall is just as important as priming a non-textured wall.3. Tape off any surfaces you want to protect. Also protect the floor area with a drop cloth as well.4. Choose the correct brushes.5. You can use the large wall brush in an “X” pattern or diagonal back and forth motion over the surface to give yourself nice even coverage.6. You can also use a roller, but rollers tend to glide over a textured wall. Missing many of the nooks resulting uneven coverage.Wait for the paint to dry. If you have missed any area, touch up those areas or apply a second coat of paint. When estimating the amount of paint needed for the job, we measure the square footage of the area we're going to paint, then divide that number by the coverage area listed on the side of the paint can we're using. Knowing that W=width, L=Length and H=Height, we use this formula: 2 x ( W L ) x H ( W x L )Here's an example of this equation in action using a room measuring 9' x 12' with an 8' high ceiling. The formula with the correct numbers plugged in would be: 2 x ( 9 12 ) x 8 ( 9 x 12 )Next, we use this formula to measure out the closet space. Once you have this figure, add it to the total of the room space, and you come up with 444 square feet. Then we divide this number by the coverage area printed on the side of the can. The side of this paint can says it covers 400 feet per gallon, so that means we need about one gallon of paint for each coat of paint we plan on applying. We always count on applying at least 2 coats, so we'll need 2 gallons of paint for this job. It's completely normal to have more paint than you need, in fact, we recommend having a little left over to fix missed spots.Do We Use Latex or Oil?First, we need to know what type of paint is already on the wall by rubbing the wall with a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol. A latex based paint will dissolve quickly which means we can repaint with oil or another latex based paint. An oil based paint will not dissolve, so we'll need to use an oil based paint to repaint, or use a coat of conversion paint, then use latex on top of that.How We Get Water Stains on Textured Ceilings.Try putting bleach into a spray bottle, and give the stained area a light spray. Check the stain after letting it dry over night, and you might see a little improvement. If so, give it another light spray. This often takes water stains out.What Tools to Use?When using brushes with oil based paints we use china bristle, and when using latex paints, we use nylon or nylon/polyester brush. We find that nylon/polyester brushes last longer than straight nylon, and this combination will give us a better finish. We only use the highest quality and the most expensive brushes, because we do not want the bristles falling out while we're painting.The surface being painted will dictate what size of brush you will need. Brushes generally come in sizes of 1" to 4," available in increments of half an inch. Smaller brushes are ideal for trim, windows, doors, and shutters, while a large 4" brush would be ideal for exterior siding. We recommend that if there is a paint product that has recommendations that make it difficult to clean up (instructions on side of can,) a cheap brush might be an option. It can be thrown away when the job is finished. As far as paint sleeves go, they are available in many different size naps. They can range from 5 mm to as high as much as 40 mm. Generally, the smoother or glossier the surface you are painting, the smaller the nap. A 5 or 10 millimeter nap is recommended for doors while a 15 or 20 mil nap may be better if you are painting interior walls. For outside surfaces, a thicker nap would be advisable.We also use tools to prepare surfaces for painting like scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sanding blocks, caulking guns, roller trays and a brush combs. Painting the exterior of a house is often a major job. Once the exterior surface is prepped for painting, you are almost ready to brush, roll, or spray on a new coat of paint.Some important information about painting your exterior siding.1. Paint colors tend to vary slightly from batch to batch.2. Mix all the paint together in one or two large containers. Leftover paint should go back in the original paint cans and be resealed.3. Plan to pain on a sunny day, working in the shade after the sun has dried off the early morning moisture.4. Try not to let the setting sun catch you in the middle of an exterior wall at the end of the day.5. In case you have to stop, try to finish painting an entire course of siding, otherwise you may leave lap marks in the middle of the course.6. Plan to paint high places in horizontal sections across the top of the exterior wall.7. Never lean away from an extension ladder.8. Paint one high section, move the ladder, and paint another. Repeat this process all the way across the exterior wall.9. Lower the ladder after doing so to work on a lower section.10. An extension ladder is beneficial for the job.11. If your house has dormers, you may have to paint them from the roof instead of a ladder. If you do not want to do this, your ladder should reach at least 3 feet above the edge of the roof.When painting either clapboard or shingles, you should pay special attention to the areas around door and window casings.
